You’re in the Source Code!

(review of the movie Source Code)
I’m so thankful that there’s something interesting (for me, at least) to watch at the cinemas today! These week have been a series of low days for movies. There weren’t anything else to see but 3D animated ones mainly intended for kids and those who really love cutesy, cheesy characters – movies of interest seem to have gone to an early summer vacation.
imageEnter the “Source Code”.
While it’s not quite the “Inception”, it’s still a welcome presentation from the currently depressed cinematic experience. It’s got enough action, story, funny bone and hints of a love story to keep you from completely setting up a boycott the theaters ‘til the next big movie arrives.

Source Code is about a US military enlist, Captain Colter Stevens, who wakes up in a train as completely different person. After 8 minutes of trying to figure out what is happening, the train blows up and killing him and the rest of the passengers. Great the hero get’s killed even when the movie barely started! End of story. Well, not exactly as Stevens gets a chance to redo the events of that last 8 minutes thanks to a special program called the ‘Source Code’. He soon discovers that his mission is to find the bomber which would in turn save people from a second attack. It’s slightly confusing at the start what this special program is but it will be explained halfway through the movie along with the certain twist of who and what exactly is happening to Stevens. Okay, to keep from giving any spoilers (beyond what the trailers provide), let’s keep it at that. Well, I will give some sort of spoilers a little later. Hehe (mischievous grin).
Jake Gyllenhaal plays Colter Stevens, along side Michelle Monaghan (his love interest), Vera Farmiga and is directed by Duncan Jones (who also directed the movie ‘Moon’ – something i have not seen before nor have any idea what of. haha). It’s a sci-fi thriller that has some very light touch of comedy and romance.
<the promised spoiler>
For IT people, don’t expect this to be like “The Net” movie from way back or even “Swordfish”. It really has nothing to do with computer source code (not directly). And don’t be too ecstatic about the motivations of the bomber either.
<end of spoiler>
Another comment that I really couldn’t help while watching this film is its similarity with the concepts of the game “Assassin’s Creed”. If you are into that game (as i once was for the first release) – then check the movie out and see the similarities (even down to the video-transition and sound effects).
All in all, I still enjoyed this movie and would recommend it to anyone needing to see a movie these days.
