Thor : The Son of Odin

thor-movie Review of the movie Thor.
One of the Avengers’ prequel movie. Marvel is really building up the character lineup for this much awaited team-based movie.
This isn’t as (unexpectedly) grand or as a blockbuster hit as Ironman but it is surprisingly enjoyable as well.

<spoiler alert>
Compared to Ironman, Spiderman and (the latest) Incredible Hulk, this has a more comic-like feel. The imagery, particularly with the story-telling of Odin gives the feel that it came right out of comic book pages – it isn’t cheesy, but quite appropriate since after all THIS is based on Marvel comics. There are also scenes where it looked like a cinematic cutscene from a video game. Again, it’s quite fine since we’re talking about mythology-based characters and places. (btw, if you want to do some additional read-ups where Marvel based the story of Thor, look for Norse mythology)
The movie isn’t really much in the story as everything can be taken as is without any deeper conflict nor history to argue about. Thankfully, even if it involved world destruction and killing of innocent lives – they managed to make it on the lighter side of cinematic experience. Thanks to the funny moments splattered all over the movie. These actually made the movie (for me) worth watching as it made it a whole lot more enjoyable than what i’ve expected.
There are a lot of stunning visuals here but not a lot of fight scenes. The movie is also played in 3D (like most scifi movies are these days) – but i haven’t seen it. I can imagine it looking good (not awesome) in 3D.
Also, i really think that Chris Hemsworth is perfect for the role! Then there’s Natalie Portman (I just love her) and Anthony Hopkins (perfect voice for story-telling and of Odin’s). Of course, you’ll catch a glimpse of Stan Lee (as to all Marvel movies) and even Hawkeye (another Marvel character).
<spoiler end>
As for my tip though: don’t expect too much from this movie as this is more of building up for the Avengers movie. Believe me, you’ll enjoy it more.
And with most Avenger character movies, there’s an additional cutscene right after the credits.
Here’s the official site.
Enjoy the movie!
