Movie Review: Immortals (3D)

imageHere is another one of those 300-style movies that are stunningly beautiful, full of gore and based on Mediterranean literature (be it history or mythology).  I’ll make this a quick one.

Immortals is the story of Theseus and is loosely based on the Greek mythology about the greatest hero of Athens (and btw, he is related to Hercules). Like ‘Clash of the Titans” before it, it isn’t the exact story as it was told in the mythologies. However, unlike “Clash” this one (for me) is actually worth watching beyond the visual effects. Of course, the visuals are a vital part (if not the most vital) of the movie.

Keeping with the traditions of these kinds of movies, there will be a lot of gore. The movie comes with warnings of sex and violence so it is definitely NOT for kids. There’s actually a lot of chopping of heads in this movie as compared to most gory movies I’ve seen. There are also lots of really great looking fight scenes. Don’t expect a lot of epic battle scenes though.

imageAs much as i loved the visuals, i really find the costumes particularly the crowns/helmets that the gods of Olympus (actually, just 6 of them) wear. Athena had a fitting crown, and so did Zeus (of somewhat being too simple though). By the way, i find it quite odd at first that Zeus would look so young. I usually see him in most movies as father-like, matured character (even that had a comment in the movie). However, after awhile it seemed ok.

another side note: there were some scenes where i think Theseus (Henry Cavill) looked like Christopher Reeves. Maybe he should play as the next Superman. Just my 20 cents.

Overall, i really enjoyed this movie. I did watch the 3d version, but i don’t think there’s much difference with the 2d one.

So, i recommend this movie to those who like stunning visuals that is backed by a good enough story, lots of really good looking fight scenes – and those who can stomach some gore. If you are going to watch it, watch the 2D one, not 3D – use that extra cash to buy a biggie popcorn instead.
