Movie Review: Prometheus

imageReally, really had high hopes for this movie. Especially, when it had Charlize Theron and Michael Fassbender (Magneto from X-Men: First Class) – all in a space-mystery, sci-fi glory.

<minor spoilers ahead>
The movie became quirky enough at the beginning with a ‘humanoid’ ingesting something and then dying. Then it’s just downhill from there. Without the special effects, i would have left the cinema already.

The story was really, really predictable and the characters were shallow – and at times downright stupid. In what universe does a biologist think that an alien worm poised like a cobra right in front of you think that it’s cute? The creature even opened up flaps on it’s head and really looked like it was about to strike – then the ‘biologist’ started baby talking to it. Real intelligent. These types of scenes are abundantly scattered throughout the movie.

There were attempts to make the characters’ storyline deep (think father issues, soul, faith) but it ultimately fails – big time. I even started to hate the two characters that i mentioned above.

With regards to the mystery of trying to find the origins of mankind – that’s also another epic fail.

This is so reminiscent of the “2001: A Space Odyssey” movie. Okay i admit, i didn’t actually watch the whole 2001 movie. It’s a classic, but i got really, really bored. However, this movie reminds me of most of the components i’ve seen in that movie – only with computer graphics. Then there’s the last part where i think it seemed to be a prequel to the ‘Aliens’ movie.

imageMaybe i was just expecting too much from this movie, but the only things i loved about this movie were the really epic special effects and the costumes (which looked similar to ME3 suits).

**i would however, consider the possible appeal of this if it were on 3D. i didn’t watch the 3D version. i ‘hope’, since most of the scenes were computer generated that at least the 3D would compensate for the rest of the movie.

Bottom line: no need to watch this movie in the theatres, unless your a super fan of 3D movies. Maybe rent it out when it comes out in DVD/Blu-ray. That’s just a big maybe.

  1. Very great to look at and features a spot-on direction from Scott, but it seems like there was too many missed opportunities for this flick to be great. Instead, it just went for ok and that’s what bummed me out. Still, can’t say I didn’t enjoy myself. Nice review Mickey.
