Movie Review: Resident Evil : Retribution (2012)

imageForget the story, just enjoy this movie as the wild-action ride that it is!

That statement should sum up my opinion about the movie – which i enjoyed really well.
This 5th instalment of the Resident Evil (RE) series of movies delivers little when it comes to story and depth but makes up with effects and badass action sequences. I guess this is to be expected as that is the direction of the series since it’s first instalment came out in 2002. The first one had most of the gist and mystery, then losing those components subtly in the succeeding movies.

It seems to be the trend for these kind of action movies, similar to latest Underworld movie. I guess each movie has their key selling point and for RE – it’s the action sequences paired with great effects. And with today’s level of CGI, the effects have great smoothness and realism than what we’ve seen before – all the more, making the action look amazing.

imageGetting a little bit of detailed but minimizing spoilers – apart from the action and special effects, i really liked that most of the characters from the very first instalment up to the previous one appeared in this movie. We do see a bit of age in Mila Jovovich (main character Alice) and Sienna Guillory (Jill Valentine) but in most aspects all them seem to look as good as when they first appeared (Michelle Rodriguez still looked as rugged as before). Lol.

I find some minor annoyances but it’s mostly with how some characters talk. Mainly, i’m referring to the way Li Bingbing (Ada Wong) talked. She sounded like a Siri with a Chinese lineage. Also, Sienna Guillory’s voice lacked power that it didn’t sound commanding even when she was, well, commanding. Then there is of course Albert Wesker – but he’s always been weird-talking.

The movie feels at times like a video game – which isn’t a surprise at all since it was based on Resident Evil games, even the characters.

note: Alice wears an ‘S&M getup’ that made her look like Selene from Underworld. Of course, Kate still rocks it better. Lol.

Conclusion: If you didn’t get the first line in this review..
Don’t expect much on the story for this movie. Ditch the impression that you’ll get any depth. This isn’t Inception, okay.
Do expect non-stop badass action sequences. You’ll enjoy the movie that way.
Of course, if you’re a fanboy of the RE series or badass heroines, you should watch it. Smile
