WWZ : Not Another Zombie Movie

To start with, i had very little hope in this movie.

imageA movie with only Brad Pitt as the only recognizable face (oh, and that guy from Lost) amongst thousands of computer generated zombies didn’t really sound appealing at all. Plus, it’s another zombie movie. Really, if it isn’t about zombies, it’s about vampires!

If Kate Beckinsale is not in that movie, it’s not worth watching.

Still, i went on ahead and saw it since some of my friends actually said it was good.

And indeed, it was.

Without bringing in unnecessary spoilers, i’ll tell you what makes it good, what it’s about and what it isn’t. It’s not a typical apocalyptic zombie movie where the world is being overrun with zombies and humanity is reduced to barbaric and un-organized groups of men trying to fight for survival no matter what the cost. Well, not quite at least. Here you’ll find (some control from the) government, a working system, some organized intelligence, logical/practical men who are still humane; and actually working mobile phones!

note: i was actually surprised to see ‘iridium’ once more. i thought it closed down some years ago.

There’s no crazy covert company bent on creating a super-weapon that resulted into a crazy zombie virus instead. In fact, the movie is even careful with the use of the word ‘zombie’ – making the characters in the movie refusing to acknowledge it as a serious description.

As a very rough picture of the movie – it’s like a cross between ‘Babel’ and ‘I am Legend’. Okay, maybe not a good comparison. Lol. Let me try again..

It’s a movie that tries to revolve around the idea of what will happen if a world-wide ‘zombie outbreak’ happens and what possible way for humans to get out of it (preferably alive, and not undead).

It’s also more of a suspense movie than a horror one – and not really gory nor scary like most zombie movies. It has elements of a zombie sci-fi but with some reality-checks (if you can really mix them together). The story is not too complicated that it gives you more headaches than fun, but neither is it too simple to be boring.

Although, the end was a bit anti-climactic, all in all this movie was a really good watch. So if you’re not in the mood for the animated movies that’s currently filling up cinema schedules, or you’re itching for that Pacific Rim but can’t get quite satisfied, or you just need a good watch this weekend – i honestly recommend this movie.

Happy watching!
